Sewage treatment typically involves multiple stages, progressively purifying the wastewater:Preliminary Treatment: This initial stage removes large solids and grit from the incoming sewage.
- Screening: Large debris like sticks, plastics, and rags are removed by passing the wastewater through screens.
- Grit Removal: The water flow is slowed down in grit chambers, allowing heavier inorganic materials like sand, gravel, and eggshells to settle out.
- Sedimentation: Wastewater enters large settling tanks, where gravity causes suspended solids to settle at the bottom, forming a sludge layer. Lighter materials like oils and grease float to the surface and are skimmed off. This process typically removes 50-60% of suspended solids.
- Aeration: The wastewater is mixed with air to encourage the growth of beneficial microorganisms (bacteria and protozoa). These microorganisms consume and break down the organic pollutants in the sewage. Common methods include activated sludge (aerated ponds) and filter beds.
- Clarification: After aeration, the mixture flows into secondary settling tanks where the microorganisms (activated sludge) settle, producing a clearer liquid effluent. A portion of this activated sludge is often recycled back to the aeration tanks to maintain the biological process.
- Filtration: The effluent may be passed through sand, gravel, or other media to remove fine particles and any remaining microorganisms.
- Disinfection: To eliminate any remaining pathogens, the water is often treated with disinfectants such as chlorine, ultraviolet (UV) light, or ozone.
- Nutrient Removal: Processes are included to remove excess nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus, which can cause algal blooms and water pollution.
- Advanced Oxidation: Some plants use advanced oxidation processes to break down persistent organic pollutants.
